Located less than a mile off the coast of “mainland” Whatcom County, Lummi Island is just a 10 minute ferry ride via the Whatcom Chief. The charming water transport ferries residents from Gooseberry Point to Lummi Island throughout the day. True to local style, the ferry continues to run as long as someone is waiting at the dock.
The island is populated by approximately 900 year-round residents who operate a local store, several restaurants, and a bed and breakfast. The island is most notable for a its very active artist community. There are very few public facilities on the island but a number of homes are available for vacation rentals.
Contrary to what many may think Lummi Island is not part of the Lummi Island Indian Reservations. Children who live on Lummi Island go to school at Lummi Island’s Beach Elementary School until suxth grade. Later on, Middle and High School aged children are bussed to Ferndale schools.
